Leading a paperless practice is not a new phenomenon in healthcare industry. Considering the amount of paperwork that doctors have to do in daily routine, this is a serious issue. Some of physicians and healthcare professionals tend to spend more time documenting and dictating than what they spend with the patient. This is exactly what Pauline Chen’s column on New York Times highlights that an average physician spends as much time doing the paperwork as it does with the patient. This lowers the efficiency of not just a particular practice but of the whole healthcare. So healthcare professionals have always been looking for ways to lower the amount of paperwork they have to do at their medical practices.
In such a scenario, Electronic Medical Records can definitely help. Not only that EMR is perfect and far superior alternate for documenting patient records, it also makes communications easy as you can send prescriptions, share patient records and more with a single click. Not to mention the promised Stimulus funding that you get by implementing EMR by following meaningful use recommendations. Getting back to the paperwork and EMRs discussion, Electronic Medical Records can surely save great amount of time that doctors will otherwise spend creating and maintaining paper based medical records for patients. However, we need effective electronic medical records solutions as well or the situation may get even worse than the paper based records where you will be using a costly solution to save your time yet will be spending equal time with your EMR as you’d spend with paper based records. Such a scenario will hamper the productivity rather than improving it.
This doesn’t mean you should doubt your decision to move to paperless practice but you need to make a smart choice for EMR. There’s whole lot of EMR vendors out there and almost all of them will claim to bring your practice a long list of potential benefits but you need to start from scratch. Do your homework and follow the procedure on how to select right EMR vendor for your medical practice. The decision to implement a specific EMR will go a long way in your practice where the much advertised one-time benefits like “guaranteed” stimulus money will lose the worth and real, and long term, benefits of practice efficiency and effectiveness will matter more. So, don’t get influenced and make the smart choice for betterment of your practice, your patients and play your role in betterment of healthcare.
