Institutionalized healthcare has always focused on ensuring patient face-to-face contact and assessment. However, with the changes in the landscape of healthcare with increasing number of hospitals, professional specializations, newer disease types and changing societal behaviors and fiscal risks, there is a demand for appropriate changes should be made with the technological support that is being used to facilitate medical practice. Steps are also being taken by the government to provide for high quality healthcare infrastructures.
The efforts aimed at improving the health care service quality for patients are also aided by interoperability. Hence the outcomes in your medical practice can be improved by implementing interoperable EHRs. Try to always target your efforts of implementing EHR systems on basis of established goals and objectives. The systems that you plan to implement should be able to save time, avoid duplication of efforts, reduce costs and time spent in operations, etc. You should also focus on follow a multi-disciplinary approach while implementing EHR systems.
While making the efforts to pursue interoperability, the intricacies and the highly delicate nature of working relationships among the multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary domains of systems and sub-systems should be understood properly.
Steps to be taken to implement interoperability solutions in Hospital Information Systems (HIS)
One of the challenges that may be involved in implementing Hospital Information Systems (HIS) is the exchange of data between computerized applications. The interoperability of different professional applications with the administrative core of HIS is important because it helps in ensuring the usability and the efficacy of the whole system. HIS is always built around a core administrative system. This helps in gathering indispensable functions such as patients' information, facilitating administrative structure, other activities in hospitals such as X-rays, operating theatre, consultations, etc. Additionally, it is important for logistics function.
However, the prime objective of HIS is to ensure gathering, displaying and streamlining the medical information between the healthcare professionals. Computer Prescription Order Entry (CPOES) is a typical example of an interoperability problem in hospital information systems. CPOES are important in order to improve prescription, dispensation and the administration of drugs to patients. Most of the times, CPOES have not been implemented owing to the problems related to human and organizational factors and in some cases they have not been implemented because of the associated technical problems particularly because of the lack of integration and interoperability between these CPOES and HIS. Thus, aggressive measures need to be taken in order to implement interoperability in HIS.
